The misrepresentation of wolf hybrids in this country is at an all time high. My conservative guess would be approximately 70% of the wolf hybrids in this country that breeders sell are misrepresented. Some wolf sanctuaries and rescue facilities advertise wolves on their web site. Some of these facilities don’t even have wolves. They are taking donations for wolf hybrids, or northern breed dogs and calling them wolves. Unfortunately this confuses the public about what really is and is not a wolf.
Animal Control even seems confused and in such a hurry out of fear to euthanize a wolf hybrid once it gets into their shelter. They are so confused that many malamutes, shepherds and huskies are killed. The rabies vaccine has worked on wolves, and wolf hybrids for many years.
Animal control knows this.
AVMA knows this. But in order to be able to quickly kill a wolf hybrid in their shelter, AC and other Organizations still say they have to have its head cut off in order to check for rabies. They know that if the rabies vaccine is ever accepted for wolves and wolf hybrids they cannot haphazardly euthanize a wolf hybrid if it bites someone and ends up in their shelter.
All wolf hybrids must have their rabies shots up to date. And you must keep your rabies tags available at all times.
If you are not willing to do the research it takes to own a wolf hybrid, and you are not willing to educate yourself enough to keep a wolf hybrid properly for the next 16 or more years of your life, you should not own one.
Its a constant battle to try to convince the general public, media and Animal Control that wolf hybrids in the right hands are just as good an animal as any other animal. Too many wolf hybrids end up poorly bred, poorly owned and many states have banned them.
Wolf hybrids are not sold in pet stores. Wolf Hybrids should not be sold as Christmas Presents. Wolf hybrids should not be sold in the back of a truck on the side of the road. But they are. Those types of irresponsibility hurt the wolf hybrid; hurt the good owners and breeders.
Poorly owned and raised wolf hybrids are on the chopping block just as Pit Bulls, Rottweiler, and other dogs are. Its not a wolf hybrid problem, or a canine problem. Its a people problem. Either you can be responsible, become responsibly educated, or you can be part of the problem. Wolf hybrids can be good-looking, or not attractive at all depending on how they are bred and what they are mixed with.
There are breeders who have mixed them with Great Pyrenees and Giant Malamutes to make them huge. There are breeders who will breed them with anything, such as a Lab, Rottweiler, Golden Retriever. These does do not make an attractive wolf hybrid. By adding a protection dog such as a Rottweiler, Pit Bull to a wolf is a combination that will be an accident waiting to happen.
A wolf hybrid was created to look as wolfy as possible with desirable dog traits. The large breed dogs such as the Great Danes, Giant Malamutes and Great Pyrenees do not often live as long as a regular dog. Protection breeds mixed with wolf often end up dead.
You should take into account if looking for a wolf hybrid that you will have to research the background of the entire dog in its pedigree.
Have these dogs and wolf hybrids had their hips checked for hip displasia? Have they been Penn Hipped? If so are their hips good, or bad? Do they have any genetic defects that can be passed on down for generations?
Have the responsible breeders had their wolf hybrids spayed or neutered if there were any defects in the pups? If not, why not? Those are questions you will have to research. What is the temperament like in the wolf hybrids? Do they get nasty during any other time of the year other than mating season? Are they alphas, betas, or omegas?
You can find more information and resources from my website (In the Company of Wolves) to help you learn more about wolf hybrids and what a magnificent canine they really can be with the right upbringing, breeding and responsible ownership. This site does not promote any irresponsible ownership, breeding, rescue or sanctuary of wolf hybrids.
I only hope they can be around after I am long gone so that other responsible people who love these animals can experience the joy, and compassion I have for them.
